The
Tuskegee Airmen movie "Red Tails", and Texas...
Trivia... Did you know that:
Before the development of the
Tuskegee airmen unit, no U.S. Army flight surgeons were black. Training of
African American men as aviation medical examiners was conducted through
correspondence courses until 1943, when two black physicians were admitted to
the U.S. Army School of Aviation Medicine at Randolph Field, Texas. This was one
of the earliest racially integrated courses in the U.S. Army. Seventeen flight
surgeons served with Tuskegee Airmen from 1941 through 1949
Also, did you know that their
Bombers-navigators learned their trades at Hondo Army Air Field and Midland
Field, Texas? Yes, there you go, a couple of historical facts for you to learn!
The film is directed by Anthony
Hemingway, who has directed for television series including ?Treme,? ?True
Blood? and ?CSI: NY,? and its ensemble cast features Cuba Gooding Jr., Terrence
Howard and Bryan Cranston, as well as Tristan Wilds (of ?The Wire? and ?90210?),
Cliff Smith (better known as the rapper Method Man), Ne-Yo and Elijah Kelley.
Mr. Lucas, the executive producer
of ?Red Tails,? said in a statement: ?I?ve wanted to do this film for a great
many years. So it is especially gratifying to see it all come together.? He
added: ?The Tuskegee Airmen were such superb pilots that it was essential for us
to create visual effects that would live up to their heroism and put audiences
in the cockpit with them. They were only in their early 20s when they performed
these amazing feats. They became the best of the best ? the top guns.?

the peace and quiet of the space above our heads. These methods of flight and
many more are representations of this year's "Silent Flight" art competition
theme.

Designed to motivate and encourage
children to study aeronautics, engineering and science, The International
Aviation Art Contest is an ideal opportunity to let your imagination take
flight and produce award-winning depictions of Silent Flight.
For inspiration, think about the
first time you saw a kite soaring above your head, dancing and darting with
wind beneath its wings. Consider a glider after it is released from a tow
plane; it is free to zip and speed, breeze rushing by. Reflect on the power of
a hot air balloon and its ability to carry multiple passengers as it combines
the forces of heat and wind. Imagine how a paraglider feels at the moment his
or her feet leave ground, depending only on wind currents to stay aloft.
Visualize a parachutist, falling fast with only a billowing canopy of nylon
and the power of the wind to soften a landing.
The F??ation A?onautique
Internationale (FAI) is interested in all forms of aviation for sports and
recreation including the following:
-
Ballooning, gliding and parachuting
-
Aerobatics

Yep! It has been a bit quieter than usual here at
The TPA, and for a good reason! We are in a quiescent
stage as we inspect, reorganize and regroup in preparation for throttling-up for
the 2012 take-off of the organization. During this short period, all your
communications and interactions will remain welcomed and reciprocated. Please
recognize that because you do not see too much TPA "news" shared here on this
page for a few weeks, does not mean that we are not cooking up a storm in the
background! We actually are! Meanwhile, we look forward to your continuing
participation as usual, and more of it!

Celebration in the works
for oldest airport in Texas (which is Alpine's Casparis Airport)
2011 is the 100th birthday for the
Casparis Airport. That could possibly make it the oldest airport in the state of
Texas. Officials at the Commemorative Air Force offices in Midland stated the
oldest they knew of was Lackland, which began operations in 1916. Documents at
the Archives of the Big Bend at Sul Ross State University indicate that Casparis
began use in 1911.
This calls for a birthday celebration. Both the city of
Alpine and the Airport Board have approved a celebration for Oct. 15, 2011.
Members of the Commemorative Air Force have indicated that
they would like to participate in the event. The timing will enable many of
their members, who will be in Midland the week before, to come over for our
event.
B-24 and smaller World War II aircraft are possible planes
that could be on display for the public. Also, rides in some of these
historic planes are expected to be available.
Many of the pilots in service during World War II were
trained in this area. Historically, this event is a landmark event for
Alpine and the area.
There will not only be planes on display and for rides at
the airport. A birthday party will be scheduled for the public and visiting
pilots at a location in Alpine for the evening of Oct. 15. History and
personal experiences related to the 100-year history will be recanted and
regaled at the party. A commemorative program of the day?s events and other
items will be available throughout the day. It will be a ?once in a
lifetime? event for Alpine and the area.
Plans for the event kicked off Tuesday night at the Alpine
Chamber of Commerce. The committee for the event will involve the City of
Alpine, Brewster County and Alpine historical groups, as well as Sul Ross.

By Mary Grady, Contributing editor -AVweb
We don't normally associate general aviation aircraft with the events of Japan's
attack on Pearl Harbor, 70 years ago this week, but a flight instructor and
student out flying that day nearly collided with a Japanese Zero -- an event
that was re-enacted Wednesday morning in Las Vegas. Cornelia Fort and her
student were flying early on Dec. 7, 1941, above Honolulu in an Interstate
Cadet, when the Zero sped straight at her, and she took over the controls to
evade it. She immediately returned to the airport to land, and later wrote that
"another plane machine-gunned the ground in front of me as I taxied back to the
hangar." In commemoration of the day, the current owner of the Cadet, airshow
pilot Kent Pietsch, flew a reenactment flight on Wednesday morning, with his
brother Warren flying the world's only active Mitsubishi A6M2 Zero fighter.
Kent Pietsch flew the Cadet from
the front seat with Cornelia's nephew, Dudley Fort, in the back seat where his
aunt would have been, Warren Pietsch told AVweb on Wednesday. "We flew
once at 7:48 a.m. and again at 9:48, which was the exact time of the attack 70
years ago," Pietsch said. "We did it all -- the same near-miss, then the landing
back at the field. The Zero 'strafed' the field, and we shot lots of video and
pictures." Cornelia Fort later became the first American woman to die in the
line of duty in the U.S. military, when the bomber she was ferrying over Texas
collided with another airplane, in 1943. The January issue of Air & Space
magazine, now online, features an in-depth story about Pietsch, the Cadet, and
Fort.

Calling the aviation industry in
Texas ?a critical component of our economy and our way of life,?
Texas Governor Rick Perry has issued a proclamation declaring November as
?Aviation Appreciation Month? in the State of Texas.
?Today, there are nearly 400
general aviation (GA) airports in the Lone Star State and more than 31,000 GA
aircraft are registered here,? said Perry. ?From pilots to mechanics to service
industry workers in our airports, thousands of Texans rely on the aviation
industry for employment.? A recent study counted 61,000 Texas aviation jobs with
a payroll of $2.5 billion.
According to Perry?s proclamation,
GA in Texas generates a total of $14.6 billion in direct, indirect and induced
economic activity, or about $580 for every man, woman and child in the state.
In his proclamation, Perry noted
that general aviation performs a variety of missions for the state?s citizens,
including transportation of essential cargo and controlling agricultural pests.
Modern agricultural aviation was born in Texas in 1951, when Galveston native
Leland Snow constructed the first airplane made for the purpose. Descendants of
his original product, now called Air Tractor airplanes, were instrumental last
year in minimizing damage from the undersea oil leak in the Gulf of Mexico.
Among Texas aviation luminaries
are astronauts Alan Bean and Gene Cernan, Bessie Coleman, Howard Hughes and Herb
Kelleher. Also long-remembered is Galveston native Douglas Corrigan, aka ?Wrong
Way? Corrigan, who tried for years to get government permission to fly from New
York to Dublin, Ireland. Finally, in 1938, Corrigan took off from New York with
an announced destination of California, but arrived 28 hours later in Dublin,
citing ?navigational errors.? The stunt made him a national folk hero

October 31,
2011:
A letter to The TPA, and our
membership, from the Alliance for Aviation Across America...
Dear Mr. Ayyad,
With the Thanksgiving deadline for
the Bi-Partisan Joint Committee of Congress (Super Committee) quickly
approaching, we here at the Alliance are reaching out aviation
organizations in Texas to voice their concerns regarding a proposed ?user
fee? for general aviation and reach out to Rep. Jeb Hensarling.
General aviation is a literal
lifeline that provides access to business tools, medical care, law
enforcement, disaster relief, and a host of important services. Any new
?user fee? tax proposal would place a huge and unfair tax burden on the
businesses, farms, flight schools, and other groups around the country
that depend on general aviation at a time when they are already
struggling. It is important that members of the ?Super Committee? hear
from those within the general aviation community of the devastating impact
introducing a ?user fee? would have on those who rely upon these
aircraft.
The Alliance hopes that you and the
Texas Pilots Association will reach out to the Congressman's office and
voice your concerns. For your convenience I have included the contact
information of the Legislative Assistant in charge of Transportation
issues as well as a a template of a letter to Congressman Hensarling
regarding the detrimental impact a ?user fee? would have on local
communities across the country. Please feel free to include your own
thoughts and views in the letter. Let him know that such a tax will
threaten millions of jobs and businesses at a time when Americans are
already struggling and is not the answer.
If you have any questions, please
feel free to contact us here at the Alliance at 202-223-9523.
Best Regards,
Aren Ghazarians -Alliance for Aviation Across America
The Honorable Congressman Jeb Hensarling
129 Cannon HOB
Washington, DC 20515
October 27, 2011
Dear Congressman Hensarling,
I am writing to express serious
concern regarding discussion of implementing a ?user-fee? tax as part of a
discussion about a solution to our country's mounting deficit crisis.
General aviation represents a vital
part of both our local and national economic infrastructure, and we are
deeply concerned that introducing a ?user fee? will have a detrimental
effect on an industry many Americans rely upon on a daily basis. Any new
?user fee? tax proposal would place a huge and unfair tax burden on the
businesses, farms, flight schools, and other groups around the country
that depend on general aviation at a time when they are already
struggling.
Across the country, general
aviation supports 1.2 million jobs, generating over $150 billion in
economic impact annually. General aviation aircraft and community
airports represent a vital lifeline for thousands of communities across
our country, providing access to business growth, law enforcement,
disaster relief, medical care and other services. As you debate measures
on reducing the national debt, we urge you not to impose a ?user fee? on
general aviation.
This harmful and unproven tax would
threaten millions of jobs and businesses at an already difficult time. I
am writing to urge you to reject these unfair taxes, and protect
businesses and communities around the country that depend on general
aviation.
Thank you for your time and
consideration.

We are pleased
to spread the word about the fourth Southwest Aviation Weather Safety (SAWS IV)
Workshop.
"The event will be held at the Marriott
Hotel in Albuquerque on October 25th and 26th, 2011. The purpose of this free,
regional workshop is to promote aviation safety and productivity through
improved weather awareness and forecasting services. The National Weather
Service Forecast Offices in Phoenix and Albuquerque are organizing the event
with the ZAB Air Route Traffic Control Center Weather Service Unit.
Aviator & Controller Weather Workshop - October 25th will feature aviation
weather hazards presentations and an optional tour of the FAA's Albuquerque Air
Route Traffic Control Center. We are working with the FAA Safety Team to make
this safety-of-flight event highly relevant for GA, commercial, and military
pilots, as well as Air Route Traffic Control Center and Air Traffic Control
Tower Controllers. Presenters from multiple National Weather Service (NWS)
Forecast Offices will be joined by guests from the FAA Safety Team, Aviation
Weather Center, HQ NWS, Arizona Pilots Association, Sunshine Aviation Safety
Studies, US Air Force, and Lockheed Martin's Prescott Flight Service Hub. Up to
three FAA WINGS Pilot Proficiency Program credits will be granted for interested
pilots who participate on this day.
Aviation Weather Forecasting Workshop - October 26th will feature activities
designed to help weather forecasters better meet the needs of their National
Aerospace System customers and partners. If possible, pilots and controllers are
encouraged to participate in discussions on this day to help us understand how
weather impacts their operations, as well as how we can improve our services and
the delivery of our products.
In addition, this workshop will provide a great opportunity to make contacts and
build relationships within the Southwest US aviation and weather forecasting
communities. Optional hot lunch buffets in the workshop venue and a casual
social dinner across the street will create ample opportunities to make new
acquaintances and further develop old ones.
The workshop agenda is now available at:
www.wrh.noaa.gov/psr/SAWS4/index.php . Participants will need to register
via this website by Oct 21st. A very special rate of only $81 per night (single
occupancy) has been arranged with the Albuquerque Marriott, which is accessible
by shuttle bus or taxi from the Albuquerque International Sunport (KABQ) and
Double Eagle II Airport (KAEG). The Marriott's deadline for reserving a room at
this rate is Oct 10th."

The Great Texas
Balloon Race, Longview,
Texas :
Jul 29 ? 31, 2011.
The Great Texas Balloon Race Story: The genesis of the Great Texas Balloon Race
was the grand opening of the Longview Mall in 1978. Local dentist and hot air
balloon pilot, Dr. Bill Bussey,
D.D.S., agreed to advertise the mall's opening by draping a sign for the
Longview Mall from his hot air balloon as he flew over the City of Longview.
From this initial event, Dr. Bussey, with the cooperation of Frankie Parson
Riggins and Mary LeTourneau, Longview Mall managers. The Longview Mall managers
agreed and allowed Dr. Bussey to create the first Great Texas Balloon Race which
happened on the first anniversary of Longview Mall.
In 1985, the Great Texas Balloon was moved to
the Stroh Brewery complex in south west Longview.
The Great Texas Balloon race was in hiatus
during 1987-1989. In 1990, the race was revived and moved to the East Texas
Regional Airport (then called the Gregg County Airport) south of Longview. The
airport is still the home of the race today.

Boy and
Girl Scouts of the
USA organization to establish a partnership -as part of our efforts to
engage our youth in aviation and promote early education in related fields.

2011:
NOTICE: The "Aviation News" feed has been removed
from this page due to Google "stuffing advertisements down our throats", via
their delivery interface, dominating a significant real-estate e-plot on this
page where news links used to be displayed, without returning measurable benefits to the organization, not even on
the relevance rankings of Google's search engine results, in contrast to
Bing -as an example, which is much more neutral
and true in its regular returns.
We will find
a more neutral and cost effective tool to bring in the news RSS's without bombarding our dear
readers with irrelevant ads and sales propaganda. If you have any suggestions,
please contact us, for we would love to hear from
you!
